On the 21st of January 2016, Rob Flaherty
came to Syracuse University to talk about how to dream Big within a career in
Public Relations. He is the CEO of Ketchum, which is a public relations and
marketing agency. This company specializes in corporate and product positioning.
His talk mainly focused on how media can create incredible opportunities in the
area of Public Relations. He provided many examples of ingenious advertisements
his team had made for smaller companies. It’s amazing how they managed to twist
the simplest product into something people can’t stop talking about. Flaherty
explained that the most valuable media is the only kind you can’t buy. Finding
the perfect story is difficult, however, people want to hear about top stories,
about their interests. So adding to this becomes easier when you know what is
in demand and how to play on the demanding side.
In the business of public relations and
communications, speed truly matters. You always have to be informed and up to
date about everything that’s going on. But there isn’t a better time than now,
than to be part of this new social media explosion. “No matter what major in
Newhouse you are, it’s a great era to be part of it”. This talk helped me
understand how a public relations company functions and it showed me how fun
their job can be while in their workplace. I learned that combining creativity with
consistent team work can create a long-lasting and amazing campaign. Also, I really enjoyed his enthusiasm and how
passionate he was about what he does. It was very motivating and enriching to
hear him speak.
